From Munich to Seoul: One Month as a Deployment Engineer in South Korea

One Month Supporting the Growth of the Celonis South Korean Team

After two years at Celonis, Annika Scholl was offered what she now describes as one of the most rewarding experiences of her career: spending a month supporting the Celonis team and customer projects on-site in South Korea.

“I am based in Munich, so even though I was excited to experience a new culture and work with our colleagues and customers in Seoul, I was also a little nervous about spending a month on the other side of the world,” Annika shares. “Looking back, it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my time at Celonis.”

As a Deployment Engineer, Annika's role is centered on innovation, change, and close customer collaboration. In her own words: “I work closely with our customers to identify process improvement opportunities and build solutions that help them optimize, automate, and scale their business processes.”

Life at Celonis: Seoul Edition

Arriving in a new country with a distinct culture and language can be daunting, but the local team immediately stepped up.

“From day one, my colleagues and customers made me feel at home. Of course, there were challenges—spending hours in taxis (and battling motion sickness while trying to work from the back seat!), navigating time zone differences, and bridging language gaps. Despite all that, I got to work closely with incredible people, adapt to a new working culture, and grow significantly along the way.”

What impressed you most about Seoul?

“Seoul immediately impressed me with how immaculate, modern, and green it is. Even as a massive metropolis, it never felt overwhelming thanks to the parks and mountains integrated right into the city.

But what stood out most was the people. Everyone I met was incredibly kind, respectful, and welcoming. Every time I visited the Seoul office, I instantly felt the collaborative atmosphere and was treated like a true part of the team.”

What was your main mission on-site?

“My main mission was to support ongoing customer projects on the ground while sharing deployment expertise with the local team.

It was a true two-way exchange: while I shared technical and project framework insights, I gained invaluable perspective on how projects are delivered in a different cultural market. We built stronger bridges between the Seoul and European teams.”

What were your biggest takeaways from the experience?

“This experience taught me how to adapt quickly. Successful collaboration relies heavily on building relationships, understanding different perspectives, and staying open to new ways of working.

My biggest takeaway? Stepping outside your comfort zone creates the best learning opportunities. Being on-site helped me grow both professionally and personally, proving just how vital strong relationships are to overcoming hurdle like time zones and language barriers.”

Which Celonis values best describe your time abroad?

• The Best Team Wins: This was probably the value I experienced the most during my time in Korea. Success depended on close collaboration between the local team and customers. I tried to contribute by sharing my deployment knowledge while also learning from the Seoul team and building strong relationships.
• Live for Customer Value: Being physically on-site helped me deeply understand our customers' daily challenges so we could deliver solutions with real, lasting business impact.

What advice would you give to colleagues considering a similar path?

“Embrace the differences and stay open-minded. Working abroad isn't just about bringing your own expertise—it’s about learning from others. If you ever have the opportunity to work abroad, take it!

And for anyone visiting Seoul: explore neighborhoods beyond the typical tourist spots, try authentic Korean BBQ, and definitely go hiking. Having Bukhansan National Park right on the doorstep of such a major city was my favorite surprise.”

Life Back in Munich

Now back in Germany, Annika leaves her colleagues with a final note of gratitude:

“A huge thank you. To everyone at Celonis who supported me and made this possible, to our customers for their trust and collaboration, and to everyone in South Korea who welcomed me so warmly and made this time truly special. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, and I sincerely hope I will be back someday.”
