Guillermo Cano joined Celonis in April 2022 as the first Quality Engineering Manager in Madrid, tasked with building a new QE team from the ground up. Today, that team spans Madrid and Munich, delivering reliable, high-quality features at scale. For Guillermo, leading a diverse, cross-cultural team has been as much about personal growth as it has been about shaping the future of quality engineering.
Celonaut Spotlight: Guillermo Cano, Quality Engineering Manager
What attracted you to Celonis?
“I was attracted by the opportunity to take on more responsibility and make key decisions in building the quality area. It was exciting to have the challenge of creating something new. I also liked that Celonis was a young and flexible company. It felt like a place that was truly ready to listen to and adopt modern ways of thinking about quality, which was very important to me.”
A day in the life:
“My days are usually a mix of different activities. A big part of my role is supporting my team, so I have many 1:1s and mentoring sessions. I also participate in strategic meetings where we discuss the future of quality in engineering. To stay connected with the technical work, I also do code reviews, write some automation tests, or review the work of others on my team. It’s a good balance between management and hands-on quality engineering.”
Main challenges:
“The main challenge is balancing the high speed of development with our high standards for quality. We work in a very fast-paced environment, so my team needs to be very efficient and strategic. We have to ensure new features are released quickly while also guaranteeing they are stable and reliable for our customers.”
Creating value for our customers:
“We are the customer’s advocate inside Engineering. We create value by building trust. Our work ensures that every new feature is reliable and high-quality. Because we have a unique, end-to-end vision of the product, we help protect the overall customer experience and ensure everything works seamlessly together.”
Looking ahead in the AI era:
“I think in the AI era, quality will be more fundamental than ever. Quality Engineering can definitely benefit from AI to help us speed up things like test automation or writing documentation. But overall, it’s very important to have a level of human review for AI’s work. It needs to be validated and verified. And who is better at doing that than Quality Engineers? Our role will be essential to ensure the quality of what AI produces.”
